Might have been worth mentioning in the copy that the director general is himself a former Tory election candidate, which casts a different light on his insistence that inclusion of an aggressive Tory spin doctor on the board, trying to interfere in hiring decisions, isn’t a problem.

This is a bad law for freedom of information. We user never read any news through Google News. We use Google to find any article, and visit the news site. If the news site can’t commercialize my visit to their wwww, that’s their problem.

I agree with Marcus Ryder’s view that the BBC coverage was unbalanced. There should have much more discussion of the rights and wrong of monarchy, and issues such as the royal family’s wealth. The coverage did not reflect the fact there are places in the UK where people are at best indifferent to the Royal family. The coverage was hugely repetitive, and sometimes mawkish.

Why did the BBC show the Royal standard flying over Balmoral mid-way through the afternoon, re-assuring us the Queen was still in residence?
Why was the ‘No Entry’ sign at the entrance to Balmoral removed late in the afternoon?

I heard about it — in New York — well ahead of the official announcement, from my wife, who works at a synagogue with many media members. She mentioned someone at CNN knowing about it. It was definitely out there.
